Risk Engineering Thought Leadership

Beyond Insurance

Chubb risk engineers are more than insurance professionals - they are dedicated to their craft in so many ways. We partner with various associations and institutions to advance the safety profession. Collectively, our network of risk engineers hold dozens of advanced degrees and certificates from organizations including:

  • American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE)
  • American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA)
  • Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
  • National Safety Council (NSC)
  • Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS)
  • North American Transportation Management Institute (NATMI)

Cutting Edge Technology

Chubb Risk Engineering Services is currently exploring the many benefits of high resolution imagery obtained from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones. Our customers demand the highest level of return from our property conservation services. Chubb is delivering with pilot programs using technology unmatched in the industry – the use of drone imagery to detect roofing issues unseen with the naked eye, and associated water intrusion loss.

Research Groups

Chubb Risk Engineering Services has participated in NFPA’s Property Insurance Research Group (PIRG). This group initiated a study of the hazards associated with lithium ion battery storage. Our direct engagement in such projects supports our customer’s need for the latest protection criteria in fire protection research involving emerging fire hazards, such as lithium ion batteries in storage occupancies.

National Conferences

Chubb has a strong commitment to the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). One third of our team are Certified Safety Professionals (CSP) who are actively involved with the participating with local chapters. At Safety 2016, the annual ASSE Professional Development Conference, Chubb presented 6 educational topics:

  • Safety for Advanced Manufacturing and Materials
  • Industrial Hygiene Sampling Plans: Practices and Pitfalls
  • Fundamentals of SH&E: Fire Protection
  • No Weak Links in Your Supply Chain
  • Occupational Health Hazards: Are You at Risk?
  • Exploring Safety Exposures When Working Outdoors

Standards Committees

Some of Chubb Risk Engineering's property specialists participate on technical committees that define the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards. For the Technical Committee for NFPA 25, one of our specialists participated to author expanded Chapter 4 (4.1.6.2) requirements, adding language indicating the evaluation is needed when there is a change in building occupancy, manufacturing process, storage arrangement, or a change in water supply. This requirement is intended to ensure sprinkler systems effectively protect life and property. These newly expanded requirements were reviewed at the 2016 NFPA Conference in June.

Also discussed at the 2016 NFPA Conference was the issue of ESFR (Early Suppression Fast Response) Sprinkler Obstruction which has plagued the fire protection and insurance industry for years resulting in costly fire loss and time consuming repairs. Recent burn testing has yielded interesting results on the impacts of various sized obstructions near these high fire challenge sprinklers, and the ensuring “shadow effect” specifically using the K17 ESFR Sprinkler. The goal is to test the current NFPA 13 obstruction rules for these sprinklers and the dramatic impact they have for building and business owners. Chubb Risk Engineering discussed the test arrays and storage configurations during the conference session to determine if common storage scenarios and commodity types were considered for future full scale burn testing.
